Lollapalooza

In 2014 our Editor-in-Chief and lead photographer Dan Garcia teamed up with Pigeons & Planes to cover Lollapalooza, live at Chicago’s Grant Park. Returning to the festival the next year, Garcia got to witness some of the best moments from the premiere festival in the past couple years. Returning to Grant Park this year, Lollapalooza is expanding the festival to include a fourth date for its 25th Anniversary, and many expect festival organizers to release its best lineup yet by the end of the month. So to celebrate Lolla’s 25th Anniversary and built up anticipation until it’s forthcoming lineup is announced, we are sharing some of our favorite moments and photos from Lollapalooza since our publication’s inception.

Childish Gambino Performs In The Pit During the Pouring Rain (2014)

In 2014, Childish Gambino was performing a ton of tour dates and festival gigs in support of his newest LP, Because The Internet. However it is hard to imagine that any of those performances stood out more than his memorable performance at Lollapalooza in 2014. Performing in the middle of a huge storm, just a few hundred feet west of Lake Michigan, Childish Gambino decided to enjoy the weather with his fans, less than a song into his setlist. Almost two years removed from the performance, we can still remember this performance like it was yesterday.

Raury Travels to Chicago for His First Time Ever (2015)

Last year, emerging singer/rapper Raury traveled from his home in Atlanta to the Windy City, for his first time ever. Never having traveled to Chicago for anything, none-the-less a huge performance at Lollapalooza, it was certainly a big day for the ‘God’s Whisper’ singer. He must have had a good time too, as Raury returned to Chicago less than a month later for the filming of his music video ‘Friends’.

Eminem Recruits Rihanna and Returns to Lollapalooza After a Memorable 2011 Performance (2014)

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

Ask fans who were lucky enough to go to Lollapalooza in 2011 and they will tell you that Slim Shady stole the show. So when fans had another chance to catch Eminem on the Lollapalooza stage, they quickly jumped on it. Fans lined up outside before the festival gates opened and rushed to the Samsung Galaxy Stage to get a good spot for Eminem’s headlining set. And like 2011, Eminem again delivered in 2014 and this time with some help from Rihanna!

Vic Mensa Nearly Dies Sneaking Into Lollapalooza, 4 Years Later He Performs There (2014)

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

A spot on Lollapalooza’s lineup couldn’t have meant more to anyone than it did to Vic Mensa in 2014. Just four years earlier, Vic Mensa nearly died after he fell off a bridge and was electrocuted while attempting to sneak into the Chicago festival. Who would have guessed that years later he would get the call from festival organizers, asking if the Chicago rapper would like to perform? Vic gave an energetic performance for his hometown crowd and even brought out his longtime friend and fellow Chicago native, Chance The Rapper, to perform a couple of their collaborations.

The Weeknd Brings The Madness to Lolla (2015)

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

The Weeknd landed a few headlining festival sets last year, including a couple especially big ones with Coachella and Lollapalooza. And while each of these performances were equally great, a lot changed for the Beauty Behind The Madness singer in the few months separating the festivals. In that short time, Abel catapulted to being one of the biggest names in music, in large part thanks to his mega single, ‘Can’t Feel My Face’. While both the California and Chicago crowds got to see a great set from The Weeknd, Chicago got to see a newly crowd R&B superstar.

Andre 3000 Unveils a Classic Lolla-Look During Outkast’s Reunion Tour (2014)

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

As anyone who loves music will remember, Outkast went on a huge festival reunion tour in 2014. Kicking off their festival tour at Coachella, Outkast eventually made their way to Chicago for a headlining set at Lollapalooza. And while his all black jumpsuits were consistent throughout his appearances (only changing the text of each suit), Andre 3000 brought these talked about jumpsuits to Chicago, and doing so he instantly had a classic Lolla-look. That night’s performance, the jumpsuit asked fans “across cultures darker people suffer most. why?”, of course that question was not answered, but Outkast put on a great show and everyone in Chicago got their fix of nostalgia.

Lorde Delivers for Her First Ever Lollapalooza Performance (2014)

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

After coming to Chicago on her headlining tour with ‘Riptide’ singer Vance Joy, Lorde hinted to fans that she would be coming back to the Second City real soon. And she kept her promise as Lorde returned to Chicago in 2014 for a memorable Lollapalooza appearance. In an iconic pair of black overalls (iconic to those who were there at least), Lorde performed the majority of tracks from her debut album Pure Heroin, as well as an awesome cover of Son Lux’s track ‘Easy’.

Paul McCartney Performs a Massive 31 Song Setlist (2015)

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

You pretty much have to be a Beatle to get the approval from festival organizers to have a 2 hour and 15 minute set, and given all the talent at Lollapalooza, it makes sense. But this rule held true as Paul McCartney had the green light to deliver one of his awesome lengthy (and rightfully so) performances. In total, Sir Paul performed a massive 31 song setlist, with a 7-track encore that ended the night with a performance of the classic Beatles’ record, ‘The End’.

Jhene Aiko Makes Us Fall In Love (2014)

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

Jhene Aiko’s infectious smile alone will make you a fan, and it’s just a bonus that her music is as good as her 2014 Lolla-look was cute. Performing on Sunday morning of Lolla in 2014, hours before her friend and collaborator Donald Glover gave his memorable performance in the pouring rain, the sun was still shining for Aiko. Her Chicago fans were in attendance, and she surely picked up some new ones as well. Let’s just hope that Aiko soon returns to the premiere Chicago festival.

Chance The Rapper Headlines for His City (2014)

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

2014 was not the first time Chicago’s Chance The Rapper hit the stage at Lollapalooza, but it was definitely his most memorable Lollapalooza performance, and perhaps his biggest show to date. Chance had a huge year in 2014, after some huge co-signs and the growing success of his Acid Rap project, Lollapalooza capped it all of. “Lil Chano from 79th” returned the favor and brought out Vic Mensa for an awesome performance of ‘Cocoa Butter Kisses’ and he even brought out R. Kelly for ‘Ignition’! With The Social Experiment to back him up, and beautiful view of his hometown fans and Chicago’s skyline in front of him, Chance put on one for the ages.

Frank Ocean’s highly anticipated and long-awaited sophomore album, Boys Don’t Cry, is reported expected to release this Friday, August 5th, via an exclusive deal with Apple Music and music fans everywhere could not be more excited. After failed expected release after failed expected release, with most of our hopes going down after this past July passed with no new music from Ocean, this time it finally looks like the moment we’ve all been waiting for is upon us.

And to be fair to Frank Ocean, it’s not just the time that has passed by since his 2012 debut, channel ORANGE, rather it’s the fact that the ‘Swim Good’ singer skyrocketed as the new face of R&B with his debut mixtape, and with channel ORANGE he put out one of the most critically acclaimed debut LPs in R&B, perhaps of all time. Whether we had to wait four years or four months, any amount of time seemed too long to wait and see how he answers to the critical success of his 2012 album.

So with August 5th just a few days away, we are certainly down the home stretch, but as we all set our Google News alerts and stay glued to Apple Music, these next few days will go by slow, so we have made a list of 5 Frank Ocean songs to get you through these next 3 days.

Our 12 Most Memorable Moments of Lollapalooza 2017

Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

For another straight year, Lollapalooza did not disappoint for its sold out crowd. With fans traveling all over the world for the Windy City music festival, this year’s lineup had high expectations and Lolla met every one of them. Fans enjoyed headlining performances from artists like Chance The Rapper, The Killers, Arcade Fire and MUSE, while also catching sets from some of the most exciting newcomers in music today.

And from Thursday afternoon to Sunday night, we have compiled our list of some of the most memorable moments we will have to look back on from Lolla 2017.

Check out our favorite moments from Lollapalooza 2017 below.

Photos by Dan Garcia/The Source/The Early Registration

Liam Gallagher Walks Off Stage After 20-Minutes

In a very Liam Gallagher fashion, the English rocker walked off stage and ended his performance after just a few songs. While many speculate it was due to the lackluster crowd side or his 5 PM slot, Gallagher later tweeted that he was having voice issues which caused him to abruptly leave without an explanation to fans. This may be a “not so top movement”, but it’s one we won’t soon forget.

Ryan Adams Brings His Tour to Chicago

After killing it for a Chicago crowd at an official Lolla Afterparty, Ryan Adams returned to the stage to perform once again for his Windy City fans, this time at the big gig itself. Adams drew in a large crowd, and with his awesome backdrop of vintage televisions and amps, the stage was set for an amazing performance.

Arcade Fire Closes Things Out on Sunday Night

What better way to end Lollapalooza than with a headlining performance from Arcade Fire? But if you missed out, don’t worry, Win Butler and company will return to Chicago when they bring their headlining tour to the United Center in a few months.

Migos Make Up for Late Start

While travel issues caused the Migos to arrive to Lollapalooza nearly 20 minutes late, the ATL trio made up for it with an awesome performance. Performing cuts from their new LP, Culture, Quavo, Takeoff and Off-Set killed it this past weekend.

Sampha Blows Us Away

Sampha was in Chicago not long ago, when he was touring with fellow Lolla ’17 artists, The xx. But yet he still managed to blow us away with his beautiful voice. Fans at the Pepsi Stage Sunday night were in for a treat from the very beginning.

Cage The Elephant Comes Out Dress-ed To Impress

Matt Shultz is like no one else, and Cage The Elephant’s performance at Lollapalooza was further evidence of just that. Coming out in a sparkly purple dress, Shult’z Cage The Elephant still delivered a wild and energetic set, but just with a little more flare than usual.

Amine Goes From Fan to Performer

Amine is no stranger to Lollapalooza, as he attended the Chicago festival last year as a fan. But this year was a little more special for the ‘Caroline’ rapper as he performed for thousands at the Pepsi Stage. Performing tracks from his new album and brushing shoulder with Malia Obama, Amine definitely had an unforgettable weekend.

Lil Yachty Creates a Fire Hazard

Lollapalooza had a good problem on its hands when Lil Yachty was set to perform at the Tito’s Stage. Since releasing its full schedule many weeks ago, Lil Yachty has continued to blow up and he essentially became too big for the stage he performed on. The crowd at Tito’s was enormous and fans were packed together like a subway train in Japan, so much so that photographers stuck in the photo pit had to climb fences to escape backstage.

Glass Animals

Of the many bands to put on epic supporting performances on the main stage were Glass Animals. David Bayley and his band gave praise to the city of Chicago, and rewarded the Lolla crowd with an amazing set.

Zara Larsson’s First U.S. Festival

Singer Zara Larsson was quick to show her excitement as the ‘Issues’ artist was performing her first ever festival date in the United States. Bringing a taste of Sweden to Chicago, Larsson’s set was an instant reminder of how many hit singles she has already worked on in the past couple years.

Vic Mensa Surprises Fans

Just hours before he stepped on stage at Perry’s, Vic Mensa announced that he would be delivering a short and sweet surprise set for his hometown festival. It was only a few years ago that Mensa risked his life trying to sneak into the festival, and now today he can draw in fans by the thousands for a surprise performance.

Big Sean Puts On a Big Performance

Perhaps our favorite performance of the entire weekend, Big Sean absolutely killed it. If you were there, than you need no other explanation, and if you weren’t then do yourself a favor and check out the GOOD Music rapper when he is in a city near you.

A List of Subliminals and References from Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” Video

$

BY TER STAFF

Taylor Swift has the internet and fans going crazy with the release of her new music video, for her Reputation single ‘Look What You Made Me Do’. Full of references to her old looks and videos and subliminals towards some of her most famous foes and ex-boyfriends (Kanye West, Katy Perry, Tom Hiddleston), there is almost too much to keep track of.

Check out our (growing) list of subliminals and references from Taylor Swift’s new ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ video below.

“I Would Very Much Like To Be Excluded From This Narrative”

In the outro to the music video, as all the various forms of Taylor Swift stand side by side, Taylor Swift shows a little humility and humor by referencing her feud with Kanye West. Holding her “Best Female Video” VMA, the version of Swift that was interrupted by Kanye tells the other Taylors that she would “very much like to be excluded from this narrative.”

This quote wasn’t from the VMAs, rather it was from an Instagram post that Taylor sent to fans to address the bad press the singer was receiving after Kim Kardashian leaked a recording of a phone call between Taylor and Kanye, where Taylor gave the green light to the lyrics from Kanye’s track ‘Famous’. Although Taylor claimed she wants to move on from the drama, her Kanye references in her new single and its video are clear.

I Love TS

Near the three-minute mark of the music video, Taylor’s backup dancers are rocking some “I Heart TS” shirts. Although his wasn’t a black glittery crop top, Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend, Tom Hiddleston, was caught by photographers on the beach rocking an “I Heart TS” tank-top of his own. This isn’t much of a shot towards Hiddleston, but its definitely a cute little Easter Egg.

Cat Burglars

Around a minute and a half into the video, Taylor Swift leads a team of “cat burglars” rocking cat masks. Many fans believe that this is taking aim at Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’ music video, where her back-up dancers are rocking Egyptian cat masks. The masks aren’t a direct rip-off by any means, but we wouldn’t be surprised if this indeed is a reference to Perry.

Famous?

There may be multiple reference to Kanye West in Taylor’s new visuals. About 2-minutes into the video, Taylor Swift lays near a pile of unconscious life-like mannequin/robots. This one may be a stretch, but this may reference Kanye West’s music video for ‘Famous’, where Kanye displayed a number of life-life naked and sleeping wax figures, one of which portrayed Swift, which she was famously unhappy about.

Snakes, Snakes and More Snakes

“Taylor Swift is a snake” has become a popular meme on the internet, especially from the perspective of many Kanye West and Calvin Harris fans, and generally from the point-of-view of any Taylor haters. With her reputation under fire, Taylor Swift has embraced this persona in her new video with snakes being pictured throughout.

Music Video References/Zombie Taylor

The new video doesn’t just take aim at Taylor’s foes, rather it also pays homage to Swift’s catalog of music videos. Sharing characters and outfits from her ‘Out Of The Woods’ video (for the Zombie scenes), ‘You Belong With Me’ video and many more, the ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ takes inspiration from Swift’s past and puts it all into one amazing video.

Katy Hair and Grammy Shade

Katy Perry and Taylor Swift share a lot, including a lot of bad blood for each other, one thing that they don’t share however is a Grammy because despite 13 nominations, Katy Perry has yet to win a Grammy. Swift made sure to remind us all of that when in her new video, she is rocking a haircut and style very similar to Katy Perry, and what is she holding? One of her Grammy awards. Cold!
